On Friday, Sep. 27, Whataburger presented Jacob Munoz and his brother Christian with a scholarship. Jacob, currently a senior at Klein Cain, was diagnosed with leukemia for the first time in January 2015. Now, at the age of 17, he has beaten the disease a total of two times.

In 2017, he celebrated being cancer-free, returning to play football his junior year. It was at the end of that season that he discovered that his leukemia was back. Christian stepped up to the plate to donate bone marrow, helping Jacob become cancer-free once again.

The Hometown Heroes program helps to highlight the unrecognized heroes in our communities. They selected him for his rigor in the fight against cancer, along with his dedication to his passions. Christian was selected for his dedication to helping his brother through his rigorous fight against cancer. The scholarship being given to them is intended to help pay for some of their college education, allowing them to thrive in higher education.

“We documented Jacob as part of our hometown heroes,” Higgins said. “We were there to film him as he walked back onto the football field and helped to document his incredible journey. In addition to that, we wanted to help the continued education of both him and his brother.”
