September Spotlight of the Month
On Friday, Sept. 6, Cole Monago made a diving catch at the Katy ISD’s Tompkins VS Klein Cain varsity football game. He was even featured on KPRC Channel 2 for the number one high school play of the week. You can see the play here. Monago was featured on the program for his completion of a hail mary pass from Klein Cain Quarterback Luke Pardee during the game.
KPRC hosts a weekly segment where they decide the top three high school football plays and feature the students on the program. First place gets a gold medal presented to them in the studio, an honor given to Cole Monago recently.
It took time for Monago to achieve the level of skill he has now. He’s been playing football since he was a kid, and has pursued it ever since.
“I started football in 3rd grade for the Klein Texans little league,” Monago said.
He started his football career with the Klein Texans were he was a wide receiver, and then he went to Doerre Intermediate where he was a quarterback. He finally became a wide receiver with the Klein Cain Hurricanes football team.
Getting Offers
Currently, Monago has received three offers from colleges and universities. Those being, Trinity University, Texas Wesleyan, and Louisiana College.
“The first time, I was speechless and just kept saying thank you over and over again,” Monago said. “The other two I was really shocked and happy but I was able to speak better.”
Athletes get offers by being the observation from scouts. These scouts are normally coaches from a college or university that come to high schools and watch the players during practice and the games.
“The first time, I was speechless and just kept saying thank you over and over again,” -Cole Monago, Wide Receiver.
In order to get offers, the athlete has to have good discipline. The schools that are giving the offers look at students’ social media accounts and their skills in the sport.
Given the Gold
On Wednesday, Sept. 11, Monago got his medal for being the top play of the week. However, Monago had two other high school students behind him.
“I was nervous because I was in a big news station with lights and cameras… it was an unbelievable experience and it made me feel like a lot of my hard work and time spent training really paid off,” Monago said.
Cole was able to go to KPRC 2 News studio to receive his medal. In addition, the medal is a circle and has the words “Friday Football Frenzy 2019″ on a red, white, and blue lanyard.
