In celebration of country music icon Dolly Parton’s 80th birthday, on Jan. 19, she released a new version of her classic song “Light of a clear Blue Morning,” which brought together a star-studded lineup including Miley Cyrus, Lainey Wilson, Queen Latifah and Reba McEntire. The updated single and its accompanying music video benefit pediatric cancer research at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee.
Originally released in March 1977, on Parton’s album New Harvest…First Gathering, “Light of a clear Blue Morning” became one of her most inspirational signature songs, peaking at No. 11 on the Billboard Hot Country songs chart. Over the years, the song has been covered by several artists including Glen Campbell and vocal groups such as The Wailin’ Jennys and conspire, showing its impact across generations.
Senior Faith Purdy shared her excitement about partons newest song, saying she has always admired the country legend not only for her talent, but for her character.
“She has always been an authentic and creative artist,” Purdy said. “She’s been one of my biggest role models for as long as I can remember.. not just as a music artist, but also a person.”
Some students were shocked to learn that Parton is still releasing music today.
“I was shocked just because I thought she was more of a 90s artist,” junior Lila Goedde said.
“It shows that no matter what age you are, you can still do whatever you want.” She added that parton encourages people to “stick to what you believe in and don’t let anyone stop you.”
Goedde also reflected on the meaning behind Parton’s music, explaining that it highlights strength and empowerment.
“Women are stronger than they actually come off as in society,” Goedde said.
Aubree Lehew shared a similar reaction, noting that many people might expect Parton to be retiring after such a long career. Lehew also mentions how widely recognized Parton remains through her merchandise, themepark, and performances.
When reflecting on her visit to Dollywood, Lehew said, “It was good.. I went two years ago. All her rides were very fun, and I went to some of her shows too.”
