The Excitement
Players running like a stampede of cattle, getting kicked, scoring goals, and switching on and off the field, the Klein Cain Soccer association has boys and girls competing with regular high school teams. Players are united as one putting their part in for the team.
“We worked together by honestly just being with each other,” team captain Victor Contreras said. “Our team has fun by playing around but when it’s time to be serious we stop… that’s honestly what I love about our team.”
The Klein Cain freshmen boys soccer team have been succeeding in the past few matches. They also did well in a tournament that they got to the finals in. Unfortunately for them, they lost the finals to The Woodlands JV A team.
The Work
The freshmen boys have been working hard to win matches. For instance, the team practices every day from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. after school. Drills are also a crucial part of practice. Examples are passing drills, shootings drills, and goalkeeper drills just to name a few.
“We can improve by not letting their height, weight, and strength not get to us because a lot of teams are going to have that and our job is to play our game, the way that’s going to win us games, but also start and finish the games with the same intensity,” Contreras said.
Another factor in having a successful soccer team is all players must have great endurance. Running around the field can get players without great endurance tired easily. In order to build that up, the soccer team runs on the track consisting of two or more miles. In order to build up a successful team like the Cain JV B soccer team, there has to be cooperation, endurance, and exceptional ball skill.
Student Roles
Like some sports that the school has, there are student roles to keep the team aligned. The captains of the team relieve some stress off of the coaches because they have other things to worry about during the game.
“You’re going to be hated at times but your job is to keep everything in check,” Contreras said. “As long as you do your part as captain everything will be alright. Well I didn’t even know if I was going to be captain this year, last year it was difficult because as a freshman you never imagine that happening but you honestly need to have a lot of heart, you’re going to have to be the one that runs that extra mile when others say it’s fine.”
Commitment
After a regular soccer season teams can advance to districts and state. In order to advance the team has to work hard and outsmart the other teams.
A usual season starts off with some scrimmage games that don’t affect anything in the regular season. A scrimmage game is just for practice to get the player ready for the real game during the regular season. After the scrimmage games are the regular season games. The last game of the season decides if they make playoff to go to state. The way it’s decided is by how many games they won and lost.
“My goal for this soccer season is to obviously make playoffs but most importantly to work hard day in and day out that we prove to the other teams that we belong here,” Contreras said.
