The Cancer Awareness Club aims to help students understand the severity of cancer as it spreads. The motto “Every ribbon has a story” represents the different types of cancers that are represented and the courage it takes to overcome them.
Beckah Bear, the vice president of the Cancer Awareness Club and a cancer survivor, is a huge supporter and wants it to flourish, as she helped with starting the club up again.
“It used to be quite an active organization. They were called the cancer strikers. Unfortunately, it kind of fell out, but this year we decided to start it up again with my fellow president Mia,” Bear said.
Mia Cappadonna, president of the Cancer Awareness Club, has shown to be an honest contributor, as she helps hold the club together with her leadership.
“This club so far has been doing great, everything we do here is welcomed to everyone and what we’re doing here is what makes this club special. Just being able to help people who are ill is amazing,” Cappadonna said.
The sponsor of the club, Sara Jackowski, remains proud of the kids for what they do.
“I’m really proud and happy of what these kids are planning and I hope they succeed with these events,” Jackowski said.
With this club starting, Bear’s main goal is to be able for other survivors or patients to have a hearing and showcase their own stories in order to give awareness to them.
“I just hope to give survivors more of a voice, especially since I’m a survivor myself,” Bear said.
There are still a lot of future events this club wants to do to spread awareness.
“We’ve been trying to plan a little event that would get the student body involved, but that’s still in the works and we’re talking about that,” Bear said.
Cappadonna wants nothing but the best with these survivors and just wants to help anyone in need.
“I truly want to make students feel heard and be able to help and support these students. In the future I hope to have events where we give survivors a huge celebration” Cappadonna said.
Jackowski’s presence as sponsor allows the club to move forward with its activities and actions.
“Though I’m only here as a sponsor, seeing them support other survivors is a work of determination,” Jackowski said.
Every soul counts, as each and every member is what makes the club possible.
“I am very thankful for the people who do take the time to come and I feel like our events are pretty successful,” Bear said.
The Cancer Awareness Club aims to create an opportunity for anyone who wishes to support any cancer survivors or someone who is going through this illness. Cappadonna, Bear and Jackowski are all working together to create a wonderful community. With this of course comes hardships, but with future events of getting more members they hope to achieve something wonderful.
