Among the faculty there is Miss Havens, an English One teacher, who is often noted for her unique teaching style.
Haven’s classroom is decorated with fun ELA related things, books, and posters for shows or movies, some even in Korean.
Havens taught in South Korea for four years to students needing to learn English. Now she’s back in the U.S. working in Klein ISD.
“I actually didn’t want to be a teacher originally, and then after I graduated college, I wasn’t really sure what I wanted to do. My degree is in psychology,” Havens said.
Some teachers in her department have great things to say about her. Havens knows how to engage her students, and make reading fun, or to make lessons enjoyable for her students, such as black out poetry, or zines (Mini magazines).
“She’s always teaching something a little bit more creative where the student has to create something and create like it’s like the highest level of learning,” Syzdek said, English One Teacher.
Haven’s classroom is a no judgment zone.
“First, she really cares about them. And she doesn’t like to judge anyone. There’s a lot of teachers that they’ll see a student is failing and they’ll kind of create this idea of who they are and Miss Havens is the opposite, she sees the students failing and she pulls them aside,” Syzdek said.
Havens even remembers being a student once, during a time when some classmates didn’t enjoy reading, even before the era of social media
“I remember being a kid and having other people in my class or people who didn’t want to read even then before social media was really a thing, ” said Havens
Vivian, a student of Havens last year, remembers that Havens made it a safe place for her to be herself. Where she feels at home in Heaven’s classroom.
“She’s a really nice teacher, one that I can trust. Other than my parents, ” Vivien Aguilar said.
Heavens also is a great team lead. And leads with her head, not her heart. She always is telling everyone on her team about her ideas.
“Then, you know, five brains is better than one. So she never likes to keep to herself and just makes her own lesson plans, like she shares everything she does with everyone else, and if something goes really well in her class, then she tells us about it,” Syzdek said.
Havens also is very organized, asks questions and honors different learning types. Like she’s always helping others in need, students or teachers.
“She always asks questions. But she’s very organized and structured to offer time for that. But I think just naturally her personality as a person is to honor kind of experiences,” Miss Coutee, another English teacher said.
A creative mind, Havens loves to bring in little projects into her class.
“And so, because I believe her age, she has the chance or the opportunity to bring in these little things that students might already know like little jeans, right? Instead of your typical like, just write it on a piece of paper, she’ll take that and turn it into something more creative which students tend to like better,” Coutee said.
Havenss is an empathetic teacher. She fosters creativity, learning and safeness in her classroom.
“She’s always there as someone that you can fall for and they will help you through the situation, which is insane to me because nobody’s perfect. Students always need someone to rely on,” Syzdek said.
Havens is a teacher to remember, by how energetic she is, how she teaches and makes reading and writing fun. Havens is also a force to be reckoned with. She is a tremendous leader for her class, and other teachers.
