Basketball officially wrapped up their 2019-2020 season: the Lady Canes on the 11th, and the boys on the 18th. The Lady Canes ended their season in a match-up against the Klein Oak Panthers. While the Panthers had previously defeated the Lady canes 33-27, the hurricanes fought relentlessly together, and despite their relentlessness, the Panthers defeated the Hurricanes with another 33-27 score. Although the night ended on a sad note for the Lady Canes, the team learned from the experience and hope to put in the hard work necessary to defeat the Panthers next season.
“We’re gonna work hard in every practice,” Akascia Tucker said. “…and continue to grow our team chemistry.”
Since the Lady Canes basketball season ended a week prior to the boys, the Lady Canes were able to come through and support boys’ basketball along with the student’s body, for their final game this season against Klein High. Although the game against the Bearkats was neck-and-neck throughout all four quarters the boys pulled it together to establish a lead and knock out the Bearkats.
“We played as a team passing it to the open man and hitting the shots,” Xavier said. “We played hard noise defense getting on the floor for loose balls, making the other team scared to shoot we just wanted it more than them.”
While neither Lady Canes or Boys Basketball landed a spot in the playoffs this season they hope to learn from the challenges they faced both mentally and physically going against other schools in the district. With the support of the coaches, graduating athletes, and student body behind them, the underclassmen hope to find themselves in a playoff spot next season. Although the journey will be long and tolling, both the boys’ and girls’ basketball teams are willing to put in the work to succeed on the court for the chance to land a spot.
“We plan on going harder than ever… we need to believe we can make it… we just need everyone else to believe in us as well,” Owens said. “We have to play as a team and play one game at a time. We’re gonna be the best team you will ever see next year.”
Though the pressure will be on next season to defeat Klein High considering it will be a rival match up, the underclassmen are willing to put in the work and produce from the things they learned by the upperclassmen. In light of the seniors graduating for the first time in Cain history, both the underclassmen and upperclassmen are grateful and show appreciation for the experience.
“It’s a bittersweet moment,” Zehrein Quillin said. “I’ll never forget the moments I had with my team. The ups and the downs, the good and the bad.”
